Justin Trudeau has faced new requests for an independent investigation into allegations that a Liberal candidate harassed a female staff member on Friday.
At a press conference, the Liberal leader ruled out a further investigation into Raj Saini’s conduct, saying there are already strong, rigorous and independent processes in place.
Saini, a Liberal candidate in Ontario, has faced complaints he harassed a former member of his staff, allegations he strongly denies.
The allegations, reported by CBC, have not been independently verified by the Canadian Press.
The Liberals have come under pressure from both the Conservatives and the NDP over their decision to allow Saini to run for the third time in the election.
Trudeau was faced with further questions on Friday as to whether the processes that examined Saini’s claims were sufficiently independent.
Trudeau said he takes these allegations very seriously.
Earlier this week, a former Liberal staff member said on Twitter that she was more than disappointed with the way the officers’ office had handled the case.
