“I broke” – Denis Shapovalov blames himself for a disappointing display
Denis Shapovalov is disappointed in himself after a disappointing third round loss in the last Slam of the season.
The Canadian was stopped in his run for the US Open by South African Lloyd Harris, who defeated the world number 10 in straight sets 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.
While Harris undoubtedly performed well, Shapovalov believes he finally fought, highlighting many chances in the game.
“I was my own opponent today,” Shapovalov told TSN after the loss. “[I was] struggling a lot with the serve and really I did fight. I mean the game obviously shows it.
“I was on my feet. I was very lucky in the first set, in the second and third, and I broke. So it’s super frustrating, but that’s how it is.[I’ve] you just have to keep working and trying to improve.
Shapovalov got early breaks in the second and third sets to go up 2-0 in each, but continued to give them up soon after before being broken again at 4-4 in each case to give Harris the chance. to serve the set and the match respectively.
“In terms of fighting, I think I did a great job bouncing after the first set, bouncing after the second set,” conceded Shapovalov. “But when the serve goes like that it’s really hard to compete with a guy like Lloyd (Harris) where you know you won’t have a lot of break opportunities.
“You have to win your service games and focus on that. It sucks, but like I said, I just need to keep working and improving.
Shapovalov’s best Slam result of the season and of his career came at Wimbledon where he reached the semi-finals.
The third round is not where the 22-year-old would have wanted to go, having reached the career-high quarter-finals in New York in 2020.
