Andhra Pradesh’s ruling YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) on Sunday rejected claims by the opposition BJP that the state government only places restrictions on Hindu festivals.
Brahmin Corporation chairman Malladi Vishnu criticized the state’s BJP leaders for politicizing the government’s decision to restrict festival celebrations, noting that the restrictions were imposed in accordance with directives from the Interior Minister of Union for the Covid-19 pandemic.
He told reporters that the restrictions were only placed on public celebrations keeping in view the possible third wave of Covid, and that the issue should not be politicized.
He pointed out that in order to avoid mass gatherings, the state government has postponed events such as the YSR Achievement Awards and Teachers’ Day celebrations. He said that even the 75th Independence Day celebrations were held without allowing public participation in the state function.
The restrictions are part of preventative measures to keep public safety in mind during the pandemic, he said, suggesting celebrations take place at the home.
He criticized BJP leaders for not talking about vaccines, Covid testing or those issues that actually benefit people. He said BJP head of state Somu Veerraju deliberately politicized the issue to mislead people and create strife between them.
Vishnu was reacting to Veerraju’s statement criticizing state government orders restricting Vinayaka Chavithi celebrations.
He had asked why the state government imposed restrictions only on Hindu festivals, leaving all other festivals. He asked the DGP to withdraw the orders restricting Hindus celebrating Vinayaka Chavithi.
The YSRCP chief released information to the media on Sunday about the restrictions on Eid-ul-Azha and Muharram. He also pointed out that the celebration of the annual Rottela Panduga in the district of Nellore was also not allowed given the pandemic situation.
