Fox News host Howard Kurtz confronted Republican Governor of California candidate Larry Elder about his criticism of the media, suggesting the GOP candidate is “fair game.” as the main challenger to Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat.
Elder, a conservative talk radio host, has regularly argued that the media is attacking him and covering his candidacy unfairly. The Republican candidate said the press was particularly against him because he is a black conservative.
During a Sunday interview on Fox News Media Buzz, Kurtz asked Elder about his assessment of media coverage.
“Some of the things you’ve said over the years on the radio – where do you get paid to be provocative, whether it’s opposing minimum wage or dealing with warming want to run the state of California?” Kurtz asked the Republican candidate.

Elder responded by insisting he never said global warming was a “pitcher.”
“I said the global warming alarmism was bullshit. But, Howard, I’ve been campaigning for five weeks now. I’ve been a politician for five weeks now. No one has asked me about any of these things. . They asked about the increase in crime. They asked me how this governor had shut down this state more severely than the other 49 governors, “Elder said.
Later in the interview, Kurtz returned to the issue of media coverage of Elder’s campaign.
“You have described the media attacks on you as a campaign of racial slander, but with the exception of that column on white supremacy that I mentioned earlier, aren’t most of these media opposed to your ideology? conservative instead of taking your reasons for racist? ” the Fox News host asked.
The GOP candidate said the media are “doing all they can to bring me down.”
“They’re afraid I might break the hold they’ve had over blacks and browns for years. All I am is common sense. I’m going to do something about crime. I’m gonna do something about it. do something about bad education. Do something about the increase in homelessness. Do something about our water crisis, against our mismanagement of forests, “Elder said.” What’s wrong? could be that bad?
The Los Angeles Times ran a controversial opinion piece in August with the headline: “Larry Elder is the black face of white supremacy. You have been warned. Another opinion piece from the famous California newspaper was titled, “Larry Elder Fans Proves He’s a Face of White Supremacy.”
Elder has become the main GOP candidate to potentially overthrow Newsom in California’s September 14 recall. governor under the rules of the recall election.
When voters go to the polls later this month, they will be asked two questions. The first is whether to keep Newsom in Sacramento or remove him from office. For Newsom to remain governor, more than 50% of voters must say they want to keep the Democratic leader.
The second question will be who should replace Newsom if the voter wants him to be removed. If Newsom does not receive the return of more than 50% of the voters, the challenger with the most votes will become governor of California. While Elder is unlikely to garner nearly 50% of the vote, he could become governor if enough voters don’t show up to support Newsom.
A few weeks ago, a poll suggested the Democratic governor may have serious problems. The number of voters saying they wanted to keep him in power only exceeded 50%, as Elder’s popularity increased. But more recent polls have indicated that Newsom is in a better position to fend off the challenge of the recall.
A survey of Californians conducted by the Public Policy Institute of California from August 20 to 29 found that 58% of voters in the state wanted Newsom to stay, while only 39% wanted him to leave, a difference of 19 points percentage in favor of the Democratic governor. .
If Elder – or another Republican – manages to topple Newsom, it would be a major upheaval as Democrats are estimated to outnumber GOP voters in the West Coast state by a two-to-one margin.

Notably, Elder rejected the possibility of running for governor in February.
“I just don’t believe I have the stomach, the temper, the personality, the drive, the drive to deal with these doofi in Sacramento for the next few years of my life,” the curator said on an episode of his show. radio.
“Have I exhausted all my excuses yet? Anyway, thank you very much for that. It’s very flattering. But no, I’m not going to run. I would miss the radio too.”
Newsweek reached out to Newsom’s press for comment, but did not immediately receive a response.
