School official says allegation of student’s haircut is false

CLINTON, Oklahoma (AP) Clinton school officials said a fifth-grader who claimed he was forcibly held in the school bathroom by two students who cut his hair was shown by video evidence to be false.

Superintendent Tyler Bridges told The Associated Press on Friday night that the videos reviewed by school officials did not support the boys’ claim.

The boy first told his family, who are members of the Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes, that he was held face down by two students in a bathroom and one of them cut him off several inches hair.

We were able to determine without a shadow of a doubt that the original claim is completely false, Bridges said.

He said he and other school officials met with Cheyenne and Arapaho tribal chiefs and members of the Oklahoma Legislative Assembly Native American caucus on Friday to discuss the incident.

Long hair among native men, including Cheyenne and Arapaho, often has cultural and religious significance, according to the Oklahoma Council for Indian Education.

Bridges said a Clinton Police Department investigation into the incident is underway. A phone message left Friday night with Clinton Police Chief Paul Rinkel was not immediately returned.
