Clemson OC Elliott injured by critics after loss to Georgia

It’s fair to say that the Clemson Tigers didn’t have a good offensive night in Saturday’s loss to Georgia. Offensive coordinator Tony Elliott has heard about it as well.

Elliott spoke on some of the social media criticism he received following the 10-3 loss on Monday, a game that saw Clemson limited to just 180 total yards.

I already have Twitter fingers sending me hateful messages telling me that I suck and need to be fired. I have to go back to Michelin. And things of that nature, Elliott said Monday, via Matt Connolly of ClemsonSports. And that hurts. It hurts for several reasons. It hurts because I know how much work these offensive staff and these players put in. I know how committed they are to this program.

I receive a notification. I go to the notification and it’s like, Go back to Michelin. Or someone sends me a message on Instagram. I don’t know if it’s a rookie or a family member or something and I open it. But I understand their frustration and the only thing I can tell them and everyone about this bunch of young men is that they are pushing each other. They are proud of what they do.

Elliott was an industrial engineer at a Michelin factory before becoming a soccer coach, hence the Michelin cracks. Clemson fans are certainly very familiar with theirs.

Fan frustration is a reality, especially after a performance like this, and it’s never appropriate when it turns into actual abuse. However, it seems pretty docile, and a lot of people have gotten much worse on social media. Elliott probably didn’t need to draw attention to those tweets. He’s probably going to hear even more from Michelin now that he has it.
