Scott Morrison has brushed aside criticism of his controversial Father’s Day trip from Canberra to Sydney.

The Prime Minister accused former Labor leader Bill Shorten of a “cheap blow” after calling Mr Morrison’s judgment appalling.

Mr Morrison took an Air Force plane from the nation’s capital to his hometown on Friday and spent the weekend in Sydney before returning to ACT on Monday.

Health officials granted him an exemption to return to Canberra with his limited travel to The Lodge and Parliament House.

“In politics people like to give you a lot of punches and you get used to it, but sometimes those punches can be low blows,” Mr Morrison told Sky News on Tuesday.

The prime minister said suggestions he tried to cover up the trip by posting a months-old family photo to social media on Father’s Day were cynical.

He said he joined a South Australian liberal function online on Saturday from his office at Kirribilli House.

Mr Shorten believes Mr Morrison made a mistake with so many Australians unable to see their families on Father’s Day due to border closures.

“It’s not that he doesn’t deserve to see his children, but all other Australians deserve it too,” the former opposition leader told the Nine Network.

“When people do it hard, you have to do it hard too.

“You can’t have one rule for Mr. Morrison and another rule for everyone. I just think that’s a terrible judgment.”

Travel between Sydney and Canberra is prohibited unless an exemption is granted, with NSW and ACT both subject to strict stay-at-home orders.

ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr said people were understandably frustrated with Mr Morrison’s trip.

“It’s not really a good appearance,” he told reporters in Canberra.

But he said it was reasonable to grant exemptions to the prime minister to attend meetings of the cabinet’s national security committee.

“I am not the Prime Minister’s guardian. I do not give the Prime Minister political advice and he probably would not listen even if I did.”

Labor MP Luke Gosling tweeted a photo while in quarantine in the Northern Territory after returning home after last week’s parliamentary sitting.

“I’m happy to do my part in Howard Springs after being in Canberra for Parliament,” he said.

“Of course I missed Father’s Day with my family, but hey, we’re all in the same boat, aren’t we?”

NSW has reported 1,220 other local infections and eight deaths as authorities prepare for a spike in numbers next week.

The state government will attempt to link vaccination status to the registration application used to enter sites from October.

Victoria recorded 246 cases for a second day in a row, which is the biggest increase in the outbreak.

There were 19 new cases in Canberra.

Nationally, nearly 36.43 percent of the population aged 16 and over have been fully immunized while 63.16 percent are covered with a single dose.
