President Akufo-Addo has been accused of protecting corrupt appointees

President Akufo-Addo has the will to fight corruption

This is contrary to an investigation finding that the public has no confidence in their ability to fight the threat.

His appointees are not helping the fight, however, NPP member said

Ellen Ama Daaku, a member of the ruling New Patriotic Party’s national communications team, claimed that those appointed by the president are largely responsible for corruption in government.

Ama Daaku, speaking on the Accra-based weekend news show Asaase Radios, The Forum, however, disagreed with the findings of an investigative report from the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) according to which citizens did not trust the president to fight corruption.

Many of his (Akufo-Addo) nominees did not do what they were supposed to do, but to sum up the president cannot do his job because 62% of a sample thinks it is not possible for him to fight against corruption, that I do not agree [with], she submitted.

The government and the ruling party have recently been in defensive mode, refuting allegations of corruption and economic mismanagement leveled against them by former President John Dramani Mahama.

Mahama hit the government during its thank you tour to the northern regions a fortnight ago, prompting a myriad of responses from the NPP and the government.

In his latest ‘attack’ on the government, Mahama reiterated his views on corruption when he delivered a speech on the state of the Ghanaian economy at an event held at the University of Ghana on the 6th. September.

He said: “Another major problem has been the unprecedented levels of corruption and the complete lack of accountability and prudence in the management of public funds.

“According to the Auditor General, financial irregularities in the public sector have increased from around GHS 700 million in 2016 to GHS 12 billion in 2020.

“This level of leakage will certainly affect the ability of any government to fulfill its mandate and guarantee citizens an appreciable standard of living. Nonchalance and total reluctance to fight corruption in government is a major concern and will continue to affect our economic fortunes until the trend stops.

“When I called for a change of government in 2024 as the first step towards stopping this hemorrhage of essential resources through corruption and the accountability of faulty officials, our friends in the government took offense but it remains the only way viable to save public funds in the face of abundant evidence that nothing will be done to remedy the situation, “he said.

A recent investigation by CDD-Ghana found that most Ghanaians do not believe President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has the capacity to deal with the threat of corruption in the country.

The 2,400 adults interviewed for the research which was conducted between May 3 and June 3 in Ghana’s 16 regions said they were also less optimistic about the ability of administrations to reduce crime.
