Residents of flooded Orchard Street building allege owner’s mother participated in safety inspections

Residents of a flood-damaged Lower East Side apartment building allege the owner failed to respond to the clean-up and assessment.

During Tropical Storm Ida last week, a torrent of rainwater hit the bones of 93 Orchard Street (the building with Sams Knitwear). A dramatic video posted to Twitter shows stunts in the hallways and even a collapsed ceiling.

Tenants say the building’s management – S&H Equities – has yet to send inspectors to assess damage or structural safety issues. And they would be afraid to report for fear of reprisals.

Some of the apartments in the back collapsed completely, wrote a worried informant. People evacuated by jumping onto the adjacent roof.

It has been said that residents of the affected apartments continue to live in poverty.
