COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – A Democratic candidate for governor of Ohio on Wednesday called the corruption allegations against him contained in court documents filed several years ago, but recently made public baseless and false.

Nan Whaley, mayor of Dayton and 2022 gubernatorial candidate, said unfounded allegations were made against her in a federal investigation into illegal activities in Dayton and nothing was found. Whaley has never been charged.

Whaley said she only learned of her name in affidavits of federal search warrants this week. The warrants were unsealed in 2017 and 2021. Their existence and the allegations were first reported by the Ohio Capital Journal.

Whaley said she had never been the target of the investigation, which, according to affidavits filed in 2013 and 2014, focused on two men – a demolition contractor and the former Town of Dayton – who allegedly bribed Dayton politicians to consider a favorable federal contract.

Whaley was identified as one of the recipients of the bribe in the documents. The claims were second-hand and made by someone – an employee of the demolition company – with whom Whaley never interacted, according to a memo released by Whaley’s Campaign on Wednesday in response to the allegations.

“Investigators did exactly what they needed to do: carefully examined it and found nothing,” Whaley said in a statement.

Whaley’s campaign said the fact that the documents were recently unsealed indicates the FBI has closed the investigation. The investigation “is not ongoing,” said a spokeswoman for the United States attorney’s office for the Southern Ohio District, which includes Dayton.
