9/11 Education Should “Avoid Blame,” Leave “Gruesome” Details Out, Students Say

[ad_1]

Education on 9/11 should “avoid blaming” and leave out the “horrific details” of that fateful day so as not to lead to extreme nationalism, some students say.

Students from the University of Florida recently spoke to Campus Reform to share their thoughts on how 9/11 should be taught.

One of their suggestions was to avoid discussing the identity of those responsible for the terrorist attacks altogether. Others said that the idea of American exceptionalism should not be mentioned in the lessons at all.

According to one student, American exceptionalism is “rooted in many colonialist and imperialist notions of how we should treat others.”

Another student suggested that many young people who embrace the “dangerous mindset” of American exceptionalism risked becoming “extremists and truly nationalists”.

Their comments come less than two weeks after the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) posted a video on YouTube that trains teachers to teach students the American exception during class on the September 11, 2001 attacks.
