September 9, 2021 Critic’s Downbeat Annual Poll recognizes College of the Performing Arts faculty, students and alumni in various categories

College of Performing Arts alumni, faculty, and students regularly receive accolades and awards from a wide variety of organizations and industry publications. This year, Downbeat’s Critics Poll, the authority on jazz news, is no exception and is filled with alumni and faculty from the School of Jazz and Mannes School of Music in various categories.

School of Jazz and Faculty of Contemporary Music

Jane Ira Bloom won the Soprano Saxophone category.

Anat Cohen won the Clarinet category, ranked in the Album of the Year category within the Artemis group, ranked in the Big Band category within the Tentet group, and ranked in the Rising Star Jazz Group within Artemis.

Mary Halvorson won the Guitar category and placed both in the Album of the Year category and in the Jazz Group category for her album Code Girl.

Immanuel Wilkins won the Rising Star Alto Sax category.

Nir Felder won the Rising Star Guitar category.

Tomas Fujiwara won the Rising Star Drums category.

Melissa Aldana won the Rising Star Composer category, ranked in the Album of the Year category within the Artemis group, ranked in the Tenor Sax category, and the Rising Star Jazz Artist category.

Allison Miller was placed in the Album of the Year category within the Artemis group and in the Drums category.

The Westerlies, currently in residence at the School of Jazz, and featuring Willem de Koch, MA, Arts Management and Entrepreneurship ’20 and Chloe Rowlands, Jazz 14, ranked in the Jazz Album of the Year category.

Dave Douglas was placed in the Jazz Group category under the Sound Prints Quartet, the Trumpet category and the Producer category.

Arturo OFarrill and the Afro-Jazz Latin Orchestra were placed in the Big Band category.

Darcy James Argue was placed in the Big Band category within the Secret Society group and in the Arranger category.

Ryan Keberle was placed in the Trombone category.

Ingrid Laubrock was placed in the Tenor Sax category.

Julian Lage was placed in the Guitar category.

Rez Abbasi placed in the Guitar category.

Linda May Han Oh was placed in the Bass and Electric Bass categories.

Sara Caswell was placed in the Violin category.

Matt Wilson was placed in the Drums category.

Andrew Cyrille was placed in the Drums category.

Bobby Sanabria was placed in the Percussion category.

Brandee Younger was placed in the Miscellaneous (Harp) category.

Sara Serpa was placed in the Singer category.

Jen Shyu was placed in the Singer category.

Fay Victor was placed in the Singer category.

Patricia Brennan was placed in the Rising Star Vibraphone category.

Spike Wilner, who also attended Jazz, placed in the Rising Star Producer category.

Thana Alexa, Jazz 10, won the Rising Star Female Vocalist category.

Brad Mehldau, Jazz 93, was placed in the Jazz Album of the Year category for Round Again in addition to the Jazz Band category and the Piano category.

Lakecia Benjamin, Jazz 05, placed in the categories Alto Sax, Rising Star Jazz Artist and Rising Star Arranger.

Robert Glasper, Jazz 01, classified in the categories Keyboard, Producer and Beyond Artist.

Jos James, who attended Jazz, placed in the Male Singer category.

Jazzmeia Horn, Jazz 14, categorized as Female Rising Star Jazz Artist and Artist.
