JNU VC criticizes teachers alleging lack of discussion at EC meeting

New Delhi:

Jawaharlal Nehru University vice-chancellor Jagadesh Kumar on Friday called a section of teachers “chair critics” who alleged the lack of substantive discussion at executive council meetings. He said decisions at the university are made collectively by statutory bodies and their criticism affects his image.

The vice-chancellor’s remarks follow allegations by the Jawaharlal Nehru University Faculty Association (JNUTA) that no substantive discussions were allowed at Executive Council meetings. The faculty also criticized the approval of the decision to establish a medical school at the university.

Responding to criticism, Mr Kumar said: “Whether it is the establishment of a medical school or the counterterrorism course which has come under criticism, all decisions are discussed by the academic council and executive council. Any criticism against them is unfounded. . ”

“A lot of preparatory work has been done for the establishment of the School of Medicine and it is in accordance with the statutes of the university,” he said. JNUTA alleged that at the Executive Council meeting approval was given to start new undergraduate programs with provisions for the award of certificates, diplomas, graduate degrees, graduate degrees and postgraduate students leaving at different stages of their course. They claimed it would destroy the postgraduate research character of the university.

In response, the vice-chancellor said that “few of our colleagues try to degrade the image of the university” and called them “wheelchair critics”. “Some negative people oppose the implementation of the new education policy and undergraduate courses. We already have several undergraduate courses underway at the School of Languages. These teachers might not want to take on an additional teaching load, which is why they are essential for new undergraduate courses, ”he said.
