Ipswich Town 2-5 Bolton Wanderers: Paul Cook takes responsibility for defeat

Dapo Afolayan has scored five goals for Bolton in all competitions this season

Ipswich Town boss Paul Cook has taken responsibility for his side’s 5-2 home loss to Bolton Wanderers, which he described as “possibly the lowest point” of his career.

The Blues are yet to win in seven games in all competitions this season, with a crowd of boos hailing the final whistle at Portman Road.

Cook signed 19 players this summer following a club buyout in April.

“As a manager like me, who I would like to call experienced now, it’s my turn,” he told BBC Radio Suffolk. “It’s my job.

“It is an honor to run clubs like this and to improve and where you want to be you have to feel pain. We certainly felt pain today.”

Ipswich quickly took the lead thanks to Macauley Bonne’s goal in the fifth minute, but Bolton came back to the lead 2-1 when Dapo Afolayan equalized and Eoin Doyle scored from the penalty spot after Afolayan was knocked down by Kane Vincent-Young .

The hosts equalized on the half-hour with an own goal from Wanderers defender Ricardo Santos, but Afolayan gave the visitors a 3-2 lead in the first-half stoppage.

Josh Sheehan and George Johnston added goals in the second half to lift Bolton to third in Ligue 1.

Ipswich, meanwhile, sits in 22nd place in the table and former Portsmouth and Wigan boss Cook has accepted the frustration of full-time supporters.

“We have to offer more to our fans and I take responsibility for all of that,” Cook added. “This is what I was brought to do and what I have done in other clubs.

“This is probably the lowest point of my career. I’m going to take it as a man. My job is to solve problems and it’s something we’ll work hard for.”
