Here are the four seasons of The Killing, ranked by critics based on a combination of Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic ratings.

The Killing is an American crime series based on the Danish show Forbrydelsen. The series ran for four seasons with 44 episodes and was created in partnership between AMC, Fox Television Studios and Netflix, with Canadian Veena South serving as showrunner for the entire series. Killing homicide detectives Sarah Linden (Mireille Enos) and Stephen Holder (Joel Kinnaman) are investigating murders in Seattle, Washington. It also features other notable names in supporting roles like Guardians of the Galaxy’s Gregg Henry and Billy Campbell, aka The Rocketeer.

Leaving a lasting impression with its four seasons, here’s how The Killing holds up in the eyes of critics. Each season is ranked based on their combined Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes Critical Ratings, ranked from lowest to highest rated.

Season 4 50

Season 4 is The Killing’s lowest rated season and the shortest with just six episodes. The series survived the cancellation, thanks to Netflix allowing it to return and end the journeys of the main characters. After covering up the murder at the end of Season 3, Linden and Holder investigate the murder of a grizzly bear from a wealthy family whose oldest son, a student at the local military academy, is the only survivor.

Metacritic gives the season a score of 53, which is actually higher than Rotten Tomatoes’ 47%, leaving the show’s final season with a critical score of just 50. Mary McNamara wrote for the Los Angeles Times as the fourth season was only a shadow of her former glory, though she praised Joan Allen’s performance as director of the military academy. But David Hinckley wrote for Daily News that the series ended on a high note with particular praise for the performances of Enos and Kinnaman throughout the series. While reviews for the season are mostly negative, some felt the series came to a satisfying conclusion.

Season 2 67.5

Season 2 of The Killing ends the murder of Rosie Larsen. During the investigation, Linden and Holder uncover the plot and the tragedy behind the crime. Some fans were upset when Season 1 ended on a twist, leaving the crime unsolved until the Season 2 finale. Danish original series Forbrydelsen also took two seasons to wrap up its main crime and, according to South, she always intended to follow this established pattern. However, there was an expectation based on AMC’s commercial of the show and the public’s expectation that Rosie’s killer would be brought to justice in the Season 1 finale.

Season 2 isn’t as fast-paced as the premiere, critics say, but the strong acting performances and episode writing help make it a strong TV season. While the Rotten Tomatoes score of 67 and the Metacritic score of 68 for a total critical score of 67.5 are ultimately not so convincing, the average score comes from a combination of very high and very low individual reviews.

Season 3 68

Season 3 of The Killing introduces a new crime for Linden and Holder to solve. It starts with Linden working for the transport company after quitting the police force following the Rosie Larsen case. She joins the force when Holder takes on an affair with her new partner Reddick which reminds her of an affair from her past that caused her to experience psychological breakdown. While exploring the streets of Seattle and on the trail of a serial killer, Holder and Linden uncover the dark truth about a fellow police officer.

Since Season 3 picks up with a new case, it is an accessible entry point for new viewers and has a metacritic score of 69 and a Rotten Tomatoes score of 67 for a total critical score of 68. Reviews said it started slowly but has grown. ultimately and was better than the second season in part because of the introduction of a new case for Linden and Holder. Particular praise was given to Kinnaman’s performance because his energy is unique among the dreary and depressing atmosphere of the series.

Season 1 89

The first season of The Killing is considered by critics to be the strongest of the entire series despite some frustration surrounding the end of the finale. With a metacritic score of 84 and a Rotten Tomatoes score of 94, the overall score of 89 is significantly higher than any of the seasons that followed. Critics have praised the characters and the overall atmosphere while successfully adapting the story from its Danish sources, which is no small feat.

Detective Linden is investigating the case of a murdered teenage girl named Rosie Larsen on what was supposed to be her last day in Seattle before moving to California with her teenage son to get married. Instead, she focuses on the affair with her new partner, Detective Holder, a recently sober drug addict new to the homicide department. Together, they uncover a web of lies and plots that reach the mayor’s office during an election campaign.
