KOCHI: The fight between Kitex Garments and Kerala’s main political parties escalated on Monday as three MPs alleged serious violations at the factory and Kitex CMD retaliated by alleging the leaders were trying to deceive the people.
Speaking to the media after attending a meeting called by Ernakulam District Collector Jafar Malik, Thrikkkara PT MP Thomas, Kunnathunad MP PV Sreenijan and Perumbavoor MP Eldhose Kunnappilly said inspections revealed serious violations at Kitex.
The labor department had reported eight violations. There is no transparency in the use of the corporate social responsibility (CSR) fund by the company. There were anomalies in the ESI and the employee provident fund. The collector will submit a detailed report on the violations to the chief minister and we will demand strict action based on the report, Thomas said.
However, Kitex CMD Sabu M Jacob said MPs were making baseless allegations because they could not prove the charges. MPs alleged during the district development committee meeting that the Kitex factory was polluting the Kadambrayar River. Jafar called the meeting on Monday to discuss the allegations. Pollution Control Board officials had tested water samples from streams near the Kitex factory.
After testing samples from the 15 km stretch of the plant in Kadambrayar, it was found that the level of pollution was increasing in areas near the river. Tests have shown that other industrial units and apartments have polluted the river. MPs were quiet about the Kadambrayar pollution, as the PCB report had given Kitex a big boost, Sabu said.
He said MPs found fault with Twenty20 for saving 13 crore by reducing corruption. Leaders who claimed inspection by various government departments found 73 violations at Kitex now say there were only eight violations, he said.
