KILLEEN, Texas (KWTX) – Killeen City Police Chief Charles Kimble on Monday accused hybrid gangs and drug-related activity of killing a stricken 45-year-old woman and 5-year-old girl by gunfire Sunday night as they sat outside a residence.
As a community, we have to say enough is enough. There are people involved in helping these drug dealers – these gang bangers – and when are we going to say, that’s it, Kimble asked the community.
The police chief said criminals and violent crime often have an impact on our most precious asset: our children.
The Sunday shooting took place shortly before 9 p.m. in the 3400 block of Barcelona Drive. Police said the girl and woman were sitting outside when a vehicle arrived and someone inside the vehicle shot in their direction.
The gunfire hit the victims and damaged several vehicles and the residence. The girl was taken to McLanes Children’s Hospital in Temple. The woman was taken to the Baylor Scott & White Temple. The victims, who are believed to be in stable condition, have not yet been identified.
Kimble said Sunday’s shooting and the fatal shooting of 19-year-old Alondra Santiago earlier this month were both linked to gang activity in the area.
These incidents, in our view, are directly linked to the violent and illegal conduct of hybrid gangs, Police Chief Kimble said.
Gangs do not have an identifiable leader and often work together when they engage in drug trafficking, aggravated assault and murder.
Their allegiance usually goes to whoever has the most drugs at the time, Kimble said.
