MUMBAI: Congress and the BJP blamed each other on Monday after the State Election Commission declared by-elections for the OBC seats in six zilla parishads and panchayat samitis. After SEC chief UPS Madan declared the bypoll schedule, the BJP and NCP made it clear that since seats were reserved for OBC candidates, they would field members of the same community. Former minister and BJP spokesman Chandrashekhar Bawankule blamed the MVA government for the fiasco of the CBO reservation in local bodies. In our opinion, the MVA government has abandoned members of the OBC community. It was well within the powers of the state government to postpone the elections until the dispute over the OBC reservation was resolved. We have already stated that the BJP will only nominate OBC candidates to protect the interests of the OBC community, Bawankule said. Congress spokesman Atul Londhe blamed the BJP for its inability to provide reserves to the OBC community. When the 127th Amendment was passed, it was the BJP’s responsibility to ensure that the current 50% reserve cap was removed, so that members of the OBC community could be accommodated in the electoral process. The NDA government, especially the BJP, has done a great injustice to the Maratha and OBC communities. This will create discord in society, Londhe said. Londhe blamed former CM Devendra Fadnavis and the previous BJP-led government in the state for its inability to provide reserves to CBOs, in particular increasing the cap by 50%. After the 102nd Amendment, the state government lost power, but the Fadnavis government passed a resolution providing for a reservation, which was overturned by the Supreme Court. We believe the BJP has abandoned the entire OBC community for obvious political reasons. Throughout, Fadnavis has kept a low profile, Londhe said. NCP spokesman Nawab Malik said the NCP made the decision to nominate CBO candidates for these seats.
