The India-England test run ended on a sad note as the fifth and final test could not take place after the Covid-19 crisis took hold in the Indian camp led by Virat Kohli. It all started with head coach Ravi Shastri testing positive for Covid-19 in the fourth and penultimate test, followed by bowling coach Bharat Arun and field coach R Sridhar who were detected by the virus.
Before the start of the fifth and final test match, in Manchester, Indian chief physio Nitin Patel and Yogesh Parmar (who replaced Nitin after his positive report) also tested positive for the virus; forcing Indian players to request cancellation of the tour.
After the tour was canceled, many raged against Shastri for spreading the virus, especially after his book launch event in London – where Covid-19 protocols were followed. The event is therefore considered to be the main source of the spread of the deadly virus within the Team India camp.
However, former Pakistani captain Salman Butt defended Shastri and said: “Both teams existed inside a high protection zone. As for the rest of England, we saw that nobody wore a mask in the crowd. Everyone was sitting next to each other without any social distancing. Everything is open to it and, on that side, he (Shastri) is right. “
Butt further pointed out how Jarvo (or Jarvo 69) had invaded the field three times during the India-England tests and, therefore, the lack of Covid-19 protocols made it easier for the virus to spread in the Indian camp. “Even when Jarvo entered the field and collided with [Jonny] Bairstow who struck at the time, other than his arrest, nothing else was said or done. So it didn’t look like a strict bio-bubble at all. If such a thing happened in an Asian country, England would have caused problems and other countries would have talked about it as well. Because it happened in England, so it’s not a problem.
If Ravi Shastri came out, where were the authorities involved? Why wasn’t he told he couldn’t break the bubble? There are people who are there to secure and maintain the bubble and they are preventing people from going out. They keep people from getting too close to each other and make sure there is enough distance. Nothing like that was there, Butt added.
The India-England tests ended with Kohli & Co. having a 2-1 lead in all five tests. The ICC has yet to rule on the status of the final test, which was to be held at Old Trafford, Manchester.
