QUEBEC The Legault government and the English Montreal School Board denounced each other in the run-up to public hearings on Bill 96, revising Quebec’s language laws.
Content of the article
On Wednesday, Government House Leader Simon Jolin-Barrette presented a motion condemning the contemptuous remarks about the Quebec nation made by the EMSB in a resolution adopted on September 1.
Shortly thereafter, EMSB president Joe Ortona called the motion itself an attack on anglophones in Quebec.
Expressing deep disappointment with the government and the Liberal Party, which supported the motion, Ortona said it would be unfair to criticize the EMSB’s September 1 resolution as it has since been amended.
This is another example of an attack on us, the school board, and against the English-speaking community, Ortona said.
Last week, Prime Minister François Legault called the EMSB a radical group.
The school board criticized Bill 96 for having unilaterally rewritten the Constitution in order to recognize Quebec as a nation where the only language is French.
The original resolution of September 1 said that Quebec is not a nation.
Wednesday’s motion by the National Assembly also denounced all forms of Quebec denigration or qubcophobia.
But Ortona has said that criticizing a bill is not in itself disparaging Quebec.
Hearings on Bill 96 begin next week.
