Evander Kane has said he expects to be exonerated of allegations made by his ex-wife that he bet on hockey games when the NHL updates its investigation into the struggling Sharks forward next week .
Kane’s comments were made during an ESPN “SportsCenter” taped interview conducted by Linda Cohn and aired Thursday. A league spokesperson announced earlier today that he expected to announce his findings before the camp opened.
Teams open training camp for the 2021-22 season next week; the Sharks plan to hold their first ice practice on Thursday. San Jose opens the preseason on September 26 and begins the regular season on October 16.
“It is unfortunate that these allegations, false allegations, have been made,” Kane said of Anna Kane’s social media post on July 31. “Obviously when they happened I immediately understood their magnitude, not knowing what was going to happen next.
“But confident, because I know it’s not true. I was very confident, comfortable with where I was, knowing that I was going to be exonerated, am going to be exonerated, of these allegations.
Kane, who led the Sharks with 22 goals and 49 points last season, also responded to multiple reports that a number of teammates told management at the end of last season that they did not want the 30-year-old left winger.
“I think it’s easy to point fingers at me,” Kane said. “I think it’s easy to try to scapegoat myself because of some personal issues that have unfolded in public, and point it out. I think it’s an easy escape.
“At the same time, I don’t necessarily know or believe it’s true. As for the media, I really take it with a grain of salt. “
Kane filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in January, listing debts of $ 26.8 million and assets of $ 10.2 million. He has four years left of a seven-year extension of $ 49 million signed with San Jose in May 2018. Kane owes $ 28 million until 2024-25; its agreement includes a modified no-trade clause.
