Belagavi: The people of Kagwad Taluk are furious with their MP Shrimant Patil, because the sugar factory owned by the legislator would pollute the water bodies of the region, affecting the quality of drinking water. Residents of Kaulagudda, Siddewadi, Kempawad and other villages were the most affected, as Athani Sugars Limited reportedly dumped some chemical waste into water bodies, villagers said. They also allege that contaminated water is also affecting crops and that they are now forced to fetch drinking water from remote locations. Patil is chairman and managing director of Athani Sugars Limited. Although the villagers approached the administration of the factory, they denied any wrongdoing, saying they were dumping little waste into the river. However, villagers claim that the waste dumps into lakes and agricultural fields during monsoons. Residents also filed a complaint with the Pollution Control Commission. A thick black liquid is released in nearby lakes because of which the open wells are also contaminated. The factory has been doing this for ten years and now the pollution level is intolerable. We are also seeing black liquid on our fields now, said farmer Ramesh Wagmore. Speaking to TOI, Shrishail T, a farmer from Kagwad, said the water from open wells and tube wells stank of chemical waste and was no longer drinkable. The district administration must step in and resolve the issue immediately, said Jagadish H, head of the pollution control board, said the department collected samples of the waste and sent them for analysis after conducting an investigation in accordance with it. to the instructions of the tahsildar. It seems that there is a problem in these villages and it will be solved soon, he assured. Denying the villagers’ claims, Patil said the plant is equipped with an effluent treatment plant at a cost of Rs 45 crore. During the rains, some chemical waste may have flown to farmland, but this does not have the potential to damage crops, he said. He described the demonstration as an attempted defamation against him and his factory.
