Racist letters sent to Evanston restaurants rigged to look like court orders

At least two racist letters sent this week to businesses in the northern Evanston suburbs were made to look like court orders sent by Cook County judges, officials said.

At least one of the letters included the mailing address of the Cook County Courthouse in Skokie and was poorly written to give the impression that it came from a current circuit court judge.

The letters were first reported by the local Evanston Roundtable news site.

In a statement Wednesday, Chief Justice Timothy Evans said the letters were counterfeit and called their contents appalling.

Very offensive documents, falsely claiming to be orders from various current and retired Cook County Circuit Court judges, are being released by one person or group, Evans said in the statement. Documents appear to be designed as a way to intimidate recipients and others.

Evans’ office said it was working with law enforcement to track down who sent the letters.

In one of the letters sent to a company that was shared online, the author makes several racist statements and uses racist and homophobic slurs. The letter ends with the purported signature of a judge and a conclusion that it was sent by LE CLUB DES JUGES BLANCS.

In a postscript, the author wrote The best part about being a judge is that you can get away with anything.
