Northwestern University said it was investigating two fraternity houses after students said they were non-consensually drugged during rallies on the Evanston, Illinois campus. There is also now a criminal investigation of the incidents by local police.

The university has yet to determine how many students would have been involved.

On Saturday, school officials halted social events and chapter-sponsored recruiting activities in some campus fraternities. The suspension will last until October 17, at the earliest.

The university is encouraging students to seek counseling on campus and other health services as needed, as student protests erupt at both locations where the incidents allegedly took place.

“I am here because several survivors have come forward to speak out about the harm they have suffered in this fraternity and others,” a student told ABC station Chicago. “This is not a unique case.”

School officials said in a statement that they were in communication with the Interfraternity Council, the governing body of many fraternities, and that they “understand[s] the seriousness of these reports and the importance of the investigations. “

IFC also passed a resolution to ban all social activities, including recruiting events, during this time.

“This decision was made to help keep our students safe,” a university representative told ABC News. “As we said in our message to the Northwestern community, the health, safety and well-being of our students is our top priority.”

The university has since reminded students of the alcohol policy in fraternity and sorority houses on campus.

Northwestern University police are urging those with information about these reports to call 847-491-3456.
