The statement read: “We are no longer confident that Steve Baldwin can effectively lead the Spirit of Washington. Until the new owner publicly presents a plan that ensures a safe environment for players and staff, and s’ commits to a real vetting process for hiring qualified employees at the highest levels, we will limit our game day activities.

“This includes the display of flags, chants and drumming in the supporters’ section.

“To the Washington Spirit players: This is not a decision we took lightly. We understand that our actions will have an immediate and negative effect on the atmosphere we help create in the stadium on match day. However, we cannot continue to operate as if there is not cancer eating away at the heart and soul of this club that you play for and that we love.

“We’ve seen enough. It’s high time. Sell the team, Steve.”

The allegations were first detailed in a Washington Post report, and an investigation was launched by the club following the report and the suspension.
