Liberia: INCHR responds to Solicitor General’s allegation of smear campaign against government officials

MONROVIA The National Independent Human Rights Commission (INCHR) reacted strongly to the Friday, September 24, edition of the Independent Newspaper in which the Commission was accused by Solicitor General Syrenius Cephus of making statements regarding the behavior of some government officials.

In response to the statement by the Solicitor General, the Chairman of the Commission, Cllr. Demoster Brown said the INCHR is an independent, non-partisan human rights institution with a mandate to protect and promote human rights across the country.

“INCHR’s appeal is in line with the 2005 law that established the Independent National Human Rights Commission to draw the government’s attention to human rights violations in any party of the country, ”said Cllr. Brown said.

Cllr. Dempster reminded Cllr. Cephus that the Commission will not be deterred by the falsehood and misrepresentation of the facts and the hyper-forgery allegations aimed at suggesting that the INCHR is on a smear campaign to damage the reputation of government officials.

According to him, the Commission’s press release of Wednesday (September 22) drew the government’s attention to a multiplicity of human rights issues and incidents affecting the daily lives of Liberians.

Among other issues raised, he said the Commission has looked into the persistent disappearances and mysterious deaths of peaceful citizens, including the alleged ritual killings of vulnerable women and children.

“It is necessary to put an end to such actions if necessary and to prevent such violations,” he added.

He believes that the Commission is acting within the limits of its official mandate, to remind the government to investigate events or allegations in the context of the concurrency of the State’s obligation as contained in Article 3 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

“In accordance with this mandate, INCHR reminds Cllr. Cephus that the mysterious deaths and disappearances are fundamental human rights issues that violate the fundamental rights of Liberians ”, Cllr. Brown said.

At the same time, INCHR reaffirmed its mandate to protect and promote the rights of Liberians and residents in the fifteen counties and to enhance the image of the country by contributing to an environment respectful of human rights.

Cllr. Brown further argued that these violations now create fear and restrict the movement of people in the country as well as a violation of international law.

The Commission further reminds the Solicitor General that, in carrying out its duty, it will not be deterred by the falsity and inaccuracy of the facts and the hyper-infringing allegations aimed at suggesting that the INCHR is carrying out a campaign of defamation to damage the reputation of government officials.

At the same time, INCHR reaffirmed its mandate to protect and promote the human rights of Liberians and residents in the fifteen counties and to enhance the image of the country by contributing to an environment respectful of human rights. man where investments will flourish social and economic prosperity. .

He believes it is time for the government to put in place a mechanism to immediately stem the violations in the country.
