Communist Party of India (CPI) Deputy Secretary of State JV Satyanrayana Murthy said on Wednesday that parts of the city were vulnerable to frequent flooding due to poor planning by authorities despite millions of rupees spent on planning and development work.
The city received 33 cm of rain in less than 24 hours during Cyclone Gulab. The low areas were flooded as usual. Although millions of rupees were spent a few years ago to divert the water released from the Meghadrigedda reservoir, in order to prevent the flooding of the airport, the road leading to the airport was submerged and the water had also entered the airport. Although flight operations were not affected, passengers had to wade through the water to reach the taxi rank, Mr Murthy said.
Likewise, several areas between HB colony and Swatantranagar were flooded due to torrential rains. Mr Murthy wondered how the HB colony, which was developed by the government a few years ago, could be flooded. This indicates a lack of planning. Corrective action is not taken to prevent future submersion, although this has become a recurring feature. Sheelanagar is another area that is frequently flooded, he said.
Referring to warnings from scientists and experts, Murthy said that in the future, extreme weather events such as torrential rains, floods and cyclones will become more frequent. The state government has highlighted the immense potential of Visakhapatnam as the executive capital of the PA and VMRDA has also released a new master plan, but no action plan has been developed to prevent future flooding. , did he declare.
Mr Murthy said that the submersion of the areas surrounding the port of Gangavaram increased after the construction of the port. He said port authorities should take responsibility for preventing flooding in these areas. He also condemned the poor response of officials to the disappearance of Krishna Vamsi Reddy, a youth from Peda Gantyada, missing in the floods. Vamsi and her sister, who lost their parents, lived with their grandparents. He urged the government to come to the aid of the family.
State-level workshop
Mr Murthy said the state-level party workshop would be held in the city on October 8 and 9. More than 350 district-level party leaders were expected to attend the meeting, which was held to highlight guidelines in combating the central government’s anti-worker, anti-popular and anti-farmer policies. The CPI was already involved in the backlash against the Centre’s decision to privatize the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP), he said.
CPI Secretary General D. Raja, Political Bureau Member K. Narayana and State President K. Ramakrishna are expected to participate in the workshop.
