Some Apex Legends players were unable to purchase new packs from the in-game store due to a new rule because they already had a “base item”. Now Respawn has responded to criticism – and has already made a change – after players called the practice “greedy.”
In all of the latest Apex Legends events, including Bloodhound’s current story “Old Ways, New Dawn”, players have access to special packs in the in-game store.
Not only do they feature previously released legend and weapon skins, but sometimes there are charms and packs thrown over the top, which makes them a good deal. However, as part of the new store rotation, players have been restricted from purchasing packs just for owning the Legend.
On September 29, the White Lightning Pack in the Apex Legends store was locked for most players just because they owned Octane. A notice when attempting to purchase the item read “primary item already owned.”
Respawn acknowledged this was a mistake and quickly fixed the pack to allow players to purchase it even if they own Octane.
However, technical game designer ‘RobotHavGunz’ has told players that future packs may not be available to players if they own certain parts of them.
“There will always be some of those types of packs where a ‘primary’ item can be something you already own that will disqualify you from a pack you want,” they said on Reddit.
Respawn Entertainment Future Apex Legends skin packs could be made “exclusive” to players who do not own any of the items, instead of players receiving a discount.
This is the case with Loba’s current Torrent bundle. The 2000 Apex Coins Pack includes the Torrent Loba skin and the R-301 Bronze Age skin from the Fight Night event.
If players own either, they cannot take advantage of the current pack in the store which also contains two packs and a bonus charm.
“In the case of the Octane pack, we didn’t want to own Octane (the character) to prevent purchase of the pack. In the case of the Loba pack, the exclusivity was intentional,” RobotHavGunz said.
Apex Legends players called the policy “greedy,” saying Respawn should simply offer a discount for the pack rather than block players from purchasing it.
RobotHavGunz pointed out that they are “just one of many people who can – from a technical point of view – make some changes,” but will pass player feedback to the developers responsible for the locked bundles.
