Recoil on some criticisms of Ed Orgeron

I have not hesitated to criticize LSU football head coach Ed Orgeron this year.

It’s not that I want to see Orgeron fired – it’s the opposite, in fact.

I want to see the Tigers thrive under Orgeron. I want 2019 to happen again.

Coach O who succeeds at LSU is good for college football in general. He is the ideal person as the head coach of the Tigers. Anyone running the program at this point is going to feel… weird.

That’s why I criticized Orgeron this year. I know he can do better. I’m sure he knows that too.

Earlier this month, I criticized Orgeron for his apparent interference in the offensive.

Given Orgeron’s story – his ways of intervening cost him his job at Ole Miss in the mid-2000s – I felt it was justified.

But if I’m going to criticize Coach O for his comments on the offense, then I have to commend him for his recent comments on the defense.

On Orgeron’s weekly radio show on Wednesday, he stressed that he trusted freshman defensive coordinator Daronte Jones this week to implement a three-way front against Mississippi State (via 247Sports) .

Orgeron admitted he was nervous about the change because he preferred a four-way front. But it worked against the Bulldogs.

It proves that Orgeron doesn’t get involved in meetings as much as I thought. He’s the head coach, so obviously he has the last word. But he lets his coaches train.

The fact that he trusted Jones, who still finds his way as a defensive coordinator, with such an important decision shows that Orgeron is handling this coaching staff the right way.
