The life expectancy of people born in Ayrshire is dropping, according to data released last week by National Records of Scotland.
Based on 2018-2020 data, the figures show that men born in the Health Commission regions of Ayrshire and Alan are expected to be on average 75.71 years old and women 80.01 years old. This is a decrease from 76.40 for men and 80.46 for women in 2017-2019.
In East Ayrshire, life expectancy increased from 75.88 for men to 79.23 for women between 2017 and 2019, and to 75.23 and 79.81 between 2018 and 2020.
According to the data, men born in North Ayrshire are expected to live 75.30 years, and women in the region are expected to live almost five years longer at 79.54 years. This figure rose from 76.07 to 79.98 between 2017 and 2019.
In South Ayrshire, the life expectancy of residents is the longest since birth, with a life expectancy of 76.65 years for men and 81.14 years for women. Like them, life expectancy decreases from 2017 to 2019, with men living on average to 77.28 years and women to 81.64 years.
Julie Ramsey, head of vital statistics for the NRS, said Covid is lowering life expectancy.
She says: “It is clear that the high number of excess deaths in 2020 has resulted in a decrease in life expectancy. According to our analysis, deaths from Covid-19 account for the majority of the decrease in life expectancy for both men and women. Drug-related deaths also negatively impact men’s life expectancy.
“This measure of life expectancy provides an important summary of the health of the population and helps show how this is changing. An increase in life expectancy indicates the health of the population, and a decrease indicates the health of the population. The Covid-19 has apparently resulted in a significant increase in life expectancy. This measure of life expectancy shows that the pandemic effect is a one-off shock or persists in mortality. Provides important evidence of how it affects the population. ”
Female life expectancy highest in East Renfrewshire (84.0 years), lowest in Glasgow (78.3 years) and male life expectancy highest in the Shetland Islands (80.6 years), Glasgow It was the weakest in the city (73.1 years).
