Parents tell News10NBC’s Stephanie Duprey that having to deal with this specifically in Pittsford is nothing new.
“These things are really important, but they’re also fighting for what’s going on in schools and in our community all the time,” said Kristen Turgeon, who has 10-year-old son Gus.
Gus also spoke to News10NBC and wanted to explain how these incidents make him feel as well.
“It doesn’t feel good and it shouldn’t feel like that because everyone should be treated with respect, not equally but equally,” said Gus.
News10NBC was informed that the timing of this rally could not have been better, and it was almost ironic as this unity rally was planned well in advance, and several racist cases occurred days before it does not take place. As recently as last week, students in the Pittsford Central School District walked out of the classroom in response to the district’s handling of a threatening and racist video posted to social media.
Then, two footballers from the Greek high school Arcadia claim to have been the victims of racist taunts during two different matches. At the rally tonight, parents and students said they were not only upset by the video, but also by the way the neighborhood and the city deal with racist incidents in general.
Pittsford Superintendent Michael Pero was present for the rally in support, along with one of the Pittsford City Council members.
