A Tunisian lawmaker and television presenter were arrested Sunday by Tunisian security forces for criticizing the country’s president Kais Saied, Anadolu news agency reports.

In a Facebook post, MK Abdellatif Aloui of the Karama party, which has 18 out of the 217 seats in Tunisia’s parliament, said security forces raided his home and arrested him.

In another article, lawyer Samir Ben Omar said that TV presenter Ameur Ayed was also arrested.

According to the lawyer, the two men were arrested by order of the military justice and accused of “conspiracy” against the Tunisian state.

The arrests were in connection with a television program broadcast on Friday in which Aloui criticized the recent “exceptional measures” taken by the Tunisian president.

Tunisian authorities have not commented on the arrests.

On July 25, Saied overthrew the government, suspended parliament and seized executive power. While he insists that his “exceptional measures” are aimed at “saving” the country, critics accuse him of orchestrating a coup.

The majority of parties in Tunisia reject Saied’s “exceptional measures”, with some accusing him of orchestrating a coup against the constitution.

Other parties, however, believe Saied’s decisions are correct in light of the political, economic and health crises in the North African country.
