Stratford parking lot review calls for action

Anger over the condition of the Stratfords Windsor Street parking lot prompted the District Council to carry out repairs to the site.

The Herald regularly receives complaints about parking, which many say is dropping the city.

Opposition advisers and residents have previously described how the dark and dilapidated parking lot leaves users feeling unsafe, a sight likely to attract support as darker nights approach.

This week, the issue of lights not working on the building’s stairs and surrounding walkways was raised on social media this week, reigniting criticism from the District Council for lack of action.

In response, a spokesperson for Stratford District Council said: Engineers visited the site and tried to trace the fault in the lighting equipment which was intermittent and difficult to fix.

New lighting and emergency lights for both stairwells have now been ordered and are expected to be installed this week. The front stairwell will be the priority.

Such maintenance is unlikely to alleviate complaints about the condition of the installation, but there is uncertainty as to whether substantial long-term improvements can occur.

Indeed, the parking lot is believed to be tied to the Stratfords Gateway project, a plan to redevelop a large area of land between Windsor Street and Arden Street.

The board seems reluctant to make major investments if there is the possibility that the land could be redeveloped at some point, but the walkway has suffered setbacks, with little progress in years.

However, there are signs that this could change, with the district council making an offer to the government for funding to regenerate the area and build a World Shakespeare Center.

It is not yet known whether the bid has been successful or whether the redevelopment of the Windsor Street parking lot will be part of the project, but many are hoping for it.
