FORT WAYNE A priest has resigned as chaplain at a Catholic high school in northeast Indiana after being accused of sexually abusing a minor, according to the local diocese.

The Catholic Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend said in a statement Monday that it learned on September 19 of allegations that Father David Huneck had engaged in sexual and other misconduct, including with a minor.

Huneck has resigned both as chaplain of Bishop Dwenger High School in Fort Wayne and as pastor of Saint Paul of the Cross Catholic Church in Columbia City, the diocese said. He was also suspended by the diocese from any public priestly ministry, according to the statement.

The diocese said it notified the state’s children’s services department and the report was forwarded to local police.

The diocese is ready to cooperate with civil authorities, the diocese said in a statement, which said it had no further comments at this time.

Sgt. Fort Wayne Police Department spokesman Jeremy Webb told the Journal Gazette on Monday that the department did not have an active investigation related to Huneck. A criminal case filed against Huneck could not be found in state court databases on Tuesday.

Whitley County District Attorney DJ Sigler told WPTA-TV there was an open investigation into Huneck but no criminal charges had been laid.
