Re: Post-Panda revelers converge on Russell Avenue for a destructive street party on October 3.

The annual Panda football game between the University of Ottawa and Carleton University has been a tradition in the city since 1955. The upheaval that took place Saturday night at Sandy Hill had nothing to do with football.

The tailgate party in the parking lot of the Sandy Hill arena was an opportunity for students to get drunk, during a pandemic where COVID-19 protocols should be followed. Minor hockey players have had their ice time canceled so this party can take place. In addition, the University of Ottawa paid $ 200,000 for the security of this event. Does this make sense to anyone? Are university students now running the city?

The city, police and media were all aware and warned that this could take place. The residents of Sandy Hill should not be subjected to these selfish and immature acts of hooliganism under any circumstances. But canceling the Panda Game is not the solution. It is not the fault of the staff or the football players.

Just a suggestion. Play next year’s game with no fans allowed in the stands. No tail parties. No chance taken to contribute to behavior like the one that happened this weekend.

Students who participated in the Saturday events have proven that they are no longer mature or worthy enough to attend this annual event.

Just as long-term care homes seem to have disappeared from the radar, Long-Term Care Minister Rod Phillips is promising legislation that will fundamentally review what the foundation of long-term care needs to be in Ontario and respond to recommendations from the Ontarians COVID-19 Long Term Care Commission et al.

The soon to be expanded Grove Nursing Home in Arnprior appears to be on the right track. As reporter Elizabeth Payne pointed out, it will include designs that improve dementia care, improve infection prevention and control, and make it feel like home. We hope that there will also be a culture shift towards an emotion-based model of care. We are confident that the new management of The Grove will continue on its gradual path to make residents, staff and families all feel part of a community.

Wouldn’t it be great if Phillips could actually make a dramatic change in long-term care, something no other government has been able to do for over 40 years? Everything is possible.

Give Fido, cyclists a break

Re: Letter, Don’t run your dogs beside your bike, September 25.

Many thanks to the author of the letter for pointing out the issue of cyclists forcing their dogs to run alongside them while cycling. The stress they put on their dog hurts me to watch. Hopefully the city will ban this strenuous activity. Maybe he can hand out big tickets too!
