Wolves star Raul Jimenez insists he has no ill will towards David Luiz for his role in the serious head injury that threatened the career of the Mexico international.
Jimenez suffered a broken skull and severe head trauma after a clash with the then Arsenal defender in November 2020, missing nearly a year of action.
But now he’s back for club and country and determined to put the horrific incident behind him.
Editors’ Choice What was said?
“One of their players goes to the near post and passes me,” Jimenez told Mexican radio W as he prepares for his return to El Tri in the current international break.
“If I hadn’t taken this step, I wouldn’t jump back, and I would have jumped in front of him.
“By jumping back he caught up with me. I take 100% responsibility for David Luiz; he was leaving with the intention of directing the ball; unfortunately it was on my head.”
The forward also admitted that his memory of the clash remains unclear and that he is trying to piece together events with the help of his fellow Wolves.
“I saw it (the incident) several times. I asked the club’s video and social media people if they had any different plans for the incident,” he added.
“I don’t remember anything; I remember we got to the stadium, I went out to see the pitch, I went to the locker room to change and then the lights went out.
“I don’t remember when the game started, neither the corner kick nor the kick.
“Being in the hospital. I was conscious when I was in the ambulance on the way to the hospital, but I don’t remember; I don’t remember after the operation.
“I have memories of things that I did in the hospital, that they brought me my food, that they kept me from walking, but that’s not much either. “
Back with El Tri
Jimenez’s last appearance in Mexico came shortly before his injury in November 2020, when he scored in a friendly 2-0 victory over Japan.
He is now back in the middle of El Tri’s World Cup qualifying campaign, with the country currently leading the final round ahead of games against Canada, Honduras and El Salvador next week.
“I’m happy to be back after such a long time with the injury issue and not being able to do it last time,” he said.
“We are working to make it a big comeback. You never expect an injury like this, it happened for a reason but I always had the strength to come back.”
