Head of Council Wayne Fitzgerald

Cllr Wayne Fitzgerald made the comments in an interview with the BBC regarding cuts to universal credit, where he said families should take responsibility for their budgets.

In the interview, he said; Finances for many are critical. There are other ways to generate money for your family.

I would be one of the first to say here that families should take charge of themselves, take charge of their lives, the number of children they have, what they do with their money, the jobs they do .

The comments – particularly around the number of children families have – have been criticized this week.

A twitter user wrote:… think about how many children they have. What does he expect from people? Getting rid of a couple? while another said: Simply awful and not surprising. Plus, the jobs they have are an insult to so many people who sometimes work more than one job to keep their heads above water.

Person said: what about after the @Cllrfitzgerald children are born? No heat this month Jonny, have you tried not to be born into a family that suffered a rapid financial crisis due to the pandemic?

Speaking to the Peterborough Telegraph, cllr Fitzgerald said: Like all of these things, people have different opinions about benefits and the welfare system. Most Conservative supporters would agree with me.

I have had a lot of people agree with me. Those who do not have a right to their opinion.
