Van Gogh’s invisible sketches explain his most brutally criticized painting

A collection of what are believed to be unpublished sketches of one of Vincent van Gogh’s most criticized paintings is on display for the first time.

Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum on Friday opened an exhibition of more than 50 sketches, letters and paintings that led to his work, The Potato Eaters. The Potato Eaters, completed in 1885, depicts a rural peasant family eating potatoes by candlelight.

The work has drawn criticism and mockery, including among van Gogh’s family and friends, such as the painter Anthon van Rappard.

Van Gogh, following mental health issues and cutting his ear in 1888, admitted to an asylum where he asked his mother and brother, Theo, to send him drawings so he could working on a new version of the play.

I am thinking of repainting the peasants at supper, lamp effect, van Gogh wrote in a letter, according to The Guardian. This canvas must be completely black now, maybe I could redo it entirely from memory.

However, the hindsight and criticism that van Gogh received from his relatives led to the dissolution of some relationships.

Fortunately, you can do better than that; but why then observe and treat everything so superficially? van Rappard wrote. Why not study the movements? Surely such work was not seriously planned? And with such a way of working, do you dare to invoke the names of Millet and Breton? Go on! Art is too important, it seems to me, to be treated so cavalierly.

The letter ended the friendship between van Gogh and van Rappard, and The Potato Eaters was never on display and has remained hanging over its brothers’ fireplace in Paris.

The Potato Eaters exhibition will remain visible from October 1, 2021 to February 13, 2022.
