Computer raids in the state are a reaction of the central government, Sharad Pawar said. To file
Pune:
NCP supremo Sharad Pawar said today that Income Tax Department raids on various businesses linked to family members of his nephew Ajit Pawar could be the Center’s reaction to the strong condemnation by himself and the government of Maharashtra for violence in Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh, which claimed the lives of eight people.
Speaking to reporters in Baramati, his home territory, he also said the survey of people unrelated to financial transactions under the lens was “an excessive use of power,” and urged people have to decide until when they will accept it.
Computer raids in the state are a reaction from the central government, he said.
“I strongly condemned the UP (Lakhimpur Kheri) incident, where farmers were killed. I even compared it to the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. Further, the state government condemned him at their cabinet meeting … It cannot be ruled out that the IT department’s action against various state companies is a reaction to our strong condemnation of the UP incident, ”Pawar said.
The IT department today raided some businesses linked to family members of Maharashtra’s chief deputy minister Ajit Pawar and some real estate developers accused of alleged tax evasion. Premises linked to business groups such as DB Realty, Shivalik, Jarandeshwar Sahkari Sugar Karkhana (Jarandeshwar SSK) and businesses linked to Ajit Pawar’s sisters are covered by the ongoing operation, official sources said.
Asked about the computer raids on the residences of Ajit Pawar’s sisters, the former Union minister described it as “excessive use of power”.
“The IT department has the right to exercise its power to investigate individuals related to and responsible for companies and their financial transactions. when they are going to accept such blatant use of power, ”he said.
Speaking about the drug seizure on a cruise ship off the coast of Mumbai last week, Mr Pawar said he saw people not from the Narcotics Control Bureau (BNC) remove the accused in this case. He called this interference by a political party in the work of the central agency.
His party had previously questioned the presence of two people with the NCB team during the raid and alleged that one of them was a member of the BJP.
“It was claimed that these party workers were there as witnesses. There is no harm in having witnesses during the raid or in court, but their role in the conduct of the accused at the NCB office highlights that party people are involved in the agency’s work, “Pawar alleged.
When asked if Maha Vikas Aghadi’s (MVA) partners jointly contesting the recently held local elections have benefited them, Mr Pawar said it has proven to be successful to some extent, but that this would be like jumping in a hurry.
