GUILFORD Campaign manager for the Republican list of candidates for the city’s Education Council said comments she made about the negative impact of helping children of color on white children have been taken out from their background at an education forum at the University of Connecticut.
Mary Beeman, campaign manager for Parents for Guilford Students, made the comments last week at the UConn Virtual Forum on Race in Education.
In the forum chat, Beeman commented, helping children of color feel like they belonged negatively affects white, Christian, or conservative children.
Beeman’s GOP candidate slate has sparked an ongoing debate about how breed is taught in schools in Guilford. The candidates, who could not be reached for comment on Beemans’ remarks, claimed critical race theory was taught in schools in the city. The CRT is a controversial academic framework for visualizing systems of racism and oppression in America.
However, Guilford Public Schools Superintendent Paul Freeman and other officials said critical race theory was not taught in the city.
Beeman could not be reached for comment on Thursday, but in a statement posted to Facebook, she said her remarks at the forum were poorly worded and taken out of context.
In his statement posted to the Facebook group, Not So Simply Guilford, Beeman said his comment followed a statement Freeman made during the webinar on the importance of integrating children of color.
Guilford students who may have staunch Judeo-Christian values or just conservative thinkers have been forced to submit by their teachers and classmates to leftist ideologies, wrote Beeman, a former member of the Guilford Board of Education , in his statement. Not only is diversity of thought stifled, but students are socially and emotionally victimized for having a different perspective.
Beeman concluded by stating that all children, regardless of race, religion, culture or sexual orientation, should be treated with kindness and respect and should be taught to treat others in this way.
Beeman’s statement came after Chris Moore posted a screenshot of his comments to the Facebook group, which he said was sent to him.
In fact, I reached out to her to see if it was true that she said this because I couldn’t believe it and her response was that if it was part of the public discourse it would prove her right, a Moore wrote on Facebook and reiterated in an interview Thursday with Hearst Connecticut Media.
Protect Guilford Schools, a list of two Democrats and three independents running against Beemans’ candidates, issued a statement on the comments, speaking out against racism and prejudice.
Democratic Council of Education incumbent Moira Rader said in a press release that there was no room for interpretation of Beemans’ comment.
In her comment, Ms Beeman seeks to group the children into two groups, white and non-white, Rader said in the statement. She called on our public schools to abandon their efforts in favor of diversity, equity and inclusion. Our board has devoted a great deal of time and energy to successfully prioritizing the social and emotional well-being of each student. Such racist perspectives would dismantle this important progress.
The Connecticut ACLU shared resources for those affected by Beemans’ comment, including the Connecticut Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities and Dignity in Schools, a national coalition that aims to empower families and educators on how to fight racism and oppression in schools.
It is reprehensible that a person seeking to influence public education shows such a fundamental lack of concern for the well-being of children of color and such a serious underestimation of the abilities of other children to learn from and with their peers. class, said Dan Barrett, legal director of the Connecticut ACLU.
Barrett also said the government has a responsibility to create a safe and inclusive learning environment for all children in public schools, including all students of color.
