Jesy Nelson Responds to Blackfishing Charges, Instagram Comment Deletion Claims

Jesy Nelson speaks out in response to accusations of Blackfishing.

The 30-year-old singer made her debut as a member of British girl group Little Mix and recently decided to embark on a solo career. With the release of her first solo single “Boyz”, she faces allegations of Blackfishing.

For those who don’t know, the term Blackfishing is used when a white person tries to impersonate black or mixed race, usually through tans, makeup, and hairstyles.

In August, she was asked about the Blackfishing allegations in an interview with The Guardian. She said, I would never offend anyone, and it was really upsetting. I didn’t know that was what people were feeling.

Now, Jesy is speaking out in more detail in a new interview that just came out.

Vautour asked Jesy if she had given any thought to the allegations and if she understood the points that were raised.

“The whole time that I was in Little Mix, I never had any of that. And then I got out of [the band] and all of a sudden people were saying it. I wasn’t on social media at the time, so I left my team [deal with it], because that was when I had just left. But I mean, I love black culture. I like black music. That’s all I know; that’s what I grew up on, ”said Jesy. “I am very aware that I am a white British woman; I never said I wasn’t.

The reporter explained how comments about the Blackfishing allegations disappeared from her Instagram page. She said, “I don’t know about this. Maybe it was my team.

Jesy was asked if she felt she had changed the way she acted or dressed.

“No, not at all,” she said. “I’m just 100% myself. If you watch me on X Factor with my big curly hair, I wore sneakers and fights that’s who I am as an artist and as Jesy. Now that I’m out of Little Mix, I’m back to who I am. Like I said, I never want to be an artist who is told what to wear or what music to do. I want to be genuine and true to myself, and if people don’t like that, don’t be my fan. Don’t be part of my trip.

After the interview was over, Jesy’s press secretary reached out to Vulture to confirm that her management team had removed comments and blocked users.

Jesy emailed the reporter a comment and said: I know the comments on this had already been deleted from my IG account, only found out after a member of my management team had deleted comments. I have spent years being bullied online, so I limit the amount I go on social media. My management team has access to my account and was trying to protect me and my sanity.

The outlet had scheduled two follow-up calls with Jesy “to discuss moon fishing and identity in more detail.”

The calls were canceled and Jesy made the following statement: I take all of these comments seriously. I would never intentionally do anything to make myself appear racially ambiguous, which is why I was initially shocked that the term was addressed to me.

In another interview this week, Jesy opened up about her current relationship with her former fellow bandmates Little Mix.
