An alleged incident of racist abuse has marred Guernsey FC’s return to competitive football.
A member of the Sutton Common Rovers (SCR) coaching staff spoke to ITV News, saying his team had been ordered to “shut up the monkeys” by a Guernsey fan.
Members of SCR have reacted angrily to the incident, which allegedly occurred during the first half of the game at Footes Lane.
Guernsey FC manager Tony Vance apologized on behalf of the club.
The club have separately confirmed that they are investigating the alleged incident.
It’s really disappointing and you don’t want to see it … I spoke to Sutton Common Rovers and said I’m so sorry. I apologize, this is extremely disappointing.

Guernsey FC released a statement on Twitter, claiming the person was promptly removed from the ground.
Guernsey Police have confirmed that they had not received any report on the incident at the time of writing.
The match ended with a 3-1 victory for Guernsey FC in front of just under 1,000 fans.
A double from Ross Allen and a goal from Kyle Smith were enough to give the victory to the Green Lions.
