Trina Edwards, widow of former Governor Edward Edwards appears on Talk Louisiana with Jim Engster on October 11, 2021.

The widow of former Governor Edwin Edwards spoke publicly today about her decision to have his body exhumed and cremated last month. The Cajun prince died on July 12 and was buried a few days later. Trina Edwards said she was not allowed to bury him on the original land he bought, and she was forced to make a quick decision about his burial and quickly regretted it.

I probably wasn’t thinking clearly. I just couldn’t sleep at night. I was going over there and trying to walk to the grave, and I just couldn’t force myself out of the car, I hated it. And so, I just decided I wanted to take him home and that’s what I did, Edwards said.

Trina Edwards commented on the Jim EngstersTalk Louisiana radio show Monday.

During the process of moving her body, she was criticized for having it cremated to destroy evidence. Edwards, however, said she was comfortable with her choice to bring her remains home for the time being.

And no matter what I would have done, these particular people would have challenged. They challenged where I buried him, they challenged just about every decision I made and you know what they have the right to do, Edwards said.

As for the Silver Fox’s final resting place, Edwards hints that he might like it to be placed next to another Louisiana Governor and political legend Huey Long at the state capital.

I would really love that to happen, and I know that is what he would have wanted too, so yeah, we’re trying to do something about it, Edwards said.

But until then, his ashes will remain in the house they shared in Gonzales. Edwards says that as soon as she brought him home, she felt immense relief.
