Popular Canadian actor William Shatner, who recently became the oldest person to ever be in space, responded to Prince William of the British Royal Family after the latter’s criticism of space tourism.
Shatner, known for his role in the popular Star Trek TV franchise, recently flew into space and landed safely on Earth aboard a Blue Origin New Shephard spacecraft on October 13. The mission was the second successful manned space flight by the company that was founded by billionaire Jeff Bezos, one of the pioneers of space travel.
Following this, the Duke of Cambridge William, in an interview with the BBC, said the earth should be fixed first instead of trying to find the next place to go. We need some of the greatest brains and minds in the world determined to try to fix this planet, not to try to find the next place to go to live, he said in Thursday’s interview. I think that’s ultimately what sold it for me – it’s really crucial to focus on this [planet] rather than give up and go to space to try to think of solutions for the future, he added. However, he made no direct reference to Bezos or Shatner in his commentary.

In response, Shatner said William was mistaken in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. The idea here isn’t to say, ‘Yeah, look at me. I’m in space … No, Shatner said, defending his trip. In addition, he also gave a message to William in which he said the efforts were the first step in removing polluting industries from the earth.
I would say to the prince, and I hope the prince gets the message, this is a small step in the idea of bringing the industry up there, so that all these polluting industries, in particular, for example, industries that generate electricity … from Earth, Entertainment Tonight quoted Shatner. But he also agreed with the argument that there are some issues that need to be addressed.
Certainly William is not the first person to voice his criticism of space travel in the air. Recently, Microsoft founder and philanthropist Bill Gates also, during an appearance on a late-night talk show, expressed similar views and popularly said, Space? You know, we have a lot to do here on earth.
Plus, Bezos isn’t the only billionaire experimenting with space travel. Previously, Virgin Groups Richard Branson himself traveled to space while Tesla founder Elon Musk was part of the Inspiration4 mission. For their part, Bezos and Musk have both publicly acknowledged the criticisms leveled at them.
