ATHENS – Flooding – so bad it almost submerged a bus – caused by torrential rains in the Greek capital has had critics accusing the New Democracy government of not being prepared and having no plans that would have slowed or prevented it.
There were feuds between local, regional and central authorities over who to be prepared for in the face of heavy rains, but flooding is a regular problem in Greece as no government has yet done anything about it. ‘important to deal with it.
Even though the rain continued to fall, the blame flew everywhere.
Deputy Home Minister Stelios Petsas said the drains were not cleaned regularly by city officials. “It was really disappointing,” he said, while stressing the need in many regions for rainwater drainage projects without explaining why the New Democracy government is not addressing them at the level of the state.
Kathimerini said the finger pointing once again only resulted in trying to put the blame on someone else, with the state apparently not trying to bring people together under one roof overlapping jurisdictions, as has happened with fire and disaster response.
Nelly Papachela, a senior official of the municipality of Nikaia – Agios Ioannis Rentis, told the newspaper that “the drains on Petrou Ralli Street fall under the jurisdiction of the Attica regional authority, while those on the streets that cross it are the responsibility of the municipality ”, explaining the dilemma.
