Victorian Prime Minister Daniel Andrews’ feud with Federal Treasurer Josh Frydenberg showed no sign of abating on Monday as he unleashed a savage retaliation in a live TV interview.

Appearing on ABC News Breakfast, host Michael Rowland pressed Mr Andrews on Mr Frydenberg’s suggestion that the upcoming end of the lockdown for the Melburnians was too cautious and highlighted the greater freedoms Sydney residents have enjoyed since Monday latest.

Rowland called Mr Frydenberg a “very eminent critic” amid the Victoria pandemic response, which Mr Andrews appeared to agree to.

“Well look, I would just say to Josh, ‘It’s not about you and your gasping political rants don’t work against this virus,’ Mr Andrews retorted.

He said the focus should be on the Victorians’ “incredible” vaccine push instead of the treasurer.

“This is their time. It’s not for Josh.

“And her endless criticism and negativity, I just don’t think it’s going very well in Victoria because it doesn’t work against this virus. So I won’t say more about her.”

The couple have been embroiled in a horrific war of words for some time due to their differing policies in response to Covid-19.

The latest irritant has been Victoria’s roadmap out of lockdown, which Mr Frydenberg said was “ridiculous” and “unacceptable” over the weekend.

On Sunday, Mr Andrews announced that freedoms would arrive earlier than expected for the Melburnians, with an exit from lockdown scheduled for Friday.

Mr Frydenberg’s pursuit of greater freedom for the Victorians appeared to contradict comments by former deputy health chief Nick Coatsworth who urged caution as the nation begins to open up.

“We have to be careful as policy makers and take cautious steps to get out of lockdown,” he told the Nine Network on Monday.
