Winterville Charter Academy votes unanimously to form an anti-racist committee

GREENVILLE, NC (WITN) – A charter school in Greenville is still grappling with the fallout from a “race-insensitive” lesson given by a teacher in September.

Parents told WITN that the teacher, who has since resigned, told eighth-graders that if the U.S. Constitution didn’t exist, they would be slaves.

“She made them raise their hands during a constitutional lesson and reminded them that if it had not been for the Constitution, they would be her slaves. His slaves of the fields, ”said Kanisha Tillman, whose child was in the classroom.

The Winterville Charter Academy school board voted unanimously at a Zoom meeting on Tuesday to form an anti-racism committee, or “ARC.”

We are told that the group is made up entirely of parents and school board members and will review and offer disciplinary suggestions for students and staff when allegations of racism are brought forward.

RCAF members will also be monitoring the anti-racism training of teachers at Winterville Charter Academy.

Mary Martin, a founding member of ARC, is leading the initiative and hopes the committee can resolve tensions in the school and prevent other situations from happening in the first place.

“We just think it’s important to amplify black voices and do everything we can, in this environment, to fight racism and prejudice. These days, it is not enough to say, “I am not a racist”, we really have to do the work to usher in equality.

Another committee member and parent of Winterville Charter Academy student Salihah Frazier said the academy’s WITN teachers will participate in anti-racism training on October 28, 2021.
