ENGLEWOOD – Broncos coach Vic Fangio announced on Friday that he has no plans to make any staff or personnel changes despite four straight losses, the most recent being Thursday night against the Browns .
“Not at the moment,” Fangio said when asked if he had considered making any changes. “We’re always trying to inspire them better. I don’t have a problem with our efforts or our intentions. We just need to do a better job of training these guys to be more fundamentally healthy.”
Broncos subplot: Denver struggles to start game against Browns
Fangio, who was certainly in a dark mood on Friday, was also asked about his professional status. Now in his third season as head coach of the Broncos, Fangio is 15-24 in Denver.
He said he had spoken to chief executive officer Joe Ellis, president of football operations John Elway and general manager George Paton about how the team can improve.
Paul Klee: It’s clear Vic Fangio isn’t the guy, and GM George Paton is officially on the clock
“We have spoken and everything is very constructive and productive. We all want the same thing. We want to bring this team back to victory,” said Fangio. “I’m not worried about my status as a coach,” Fangio said. “What worries me is this team and doing everything we can to get our guys trained to play better. That’s my only goal.
So far, the Broncos have fallen short of expectations this season, sitting 3-4 after starting the season 3-0. Many thought this would be the team that would bring the Broncos back to the playoffs. But with games against the Cowboys, Chargers, and Chiefs, those odds quickly dwindle.
And perhaps the biggest surprise of all of this is that Fangio’s defense is a big part of the problem. The defense was meant to be the backbone of the Broncos and yet it has been appalling over the past four weeks. On Thursday, he let a smashed Browns team run for 186 yards with his backup quarterback and third-string runner.
On Friday, Fangio lashed out at himself and his coaches.
“What is most worrying is that our fundamentals were lacking in this game, especially on the defensive side of the ball,” said Fangio. “When it’s missing, it’s bad practice on our part, and it starts with me. We have to do a better job of teaching and performing the fundamentals.”
Injury report
The Broncos suffered several other injuries Thursday, including outside linebacker Von Miller who left the game in the second quarter with a sprained ankle. Miller said after the game that he feels he will be able to play next Sunday, Oct.31, against Washington. Fangio said on Friday he was “not sure” if Miller would return.
“I think the next four or five days will tell us exactly where he’s at,” Fangio said of Miller.
Inside linebacker Micah Kiser is expected to miss a few weeks with a groin injury and nose tackle Mike Purcell could be sidelined for an unknown length of time with a thumb injury. Purcell might need surgery.
“The way it was explained to me today, they’re not sure,” Fangio said. “But either way, every time he plays with it, he’ll have a cast on his hand, which for a D lineman is rough.”
