DJ Uiagalelei was benched against Pitt after a disappointing 2021 season with Clemson football, but Tony Elliott is more to blame than the quarterback.
Much like Spencer Rattler, Clemson’s football quarterback DJ Uiagalelei entered the 2021 season with immense expectations. Taking over from Trevor Lawrence, he was to lead the Tigers into the next era of success. This, however, did not transpire.
And on Saturday against Pitt, Uiagaleleli was benched after a terrible turnover, also joining Rattler. in this unhappy light.
The performance against Pittsburgh was not an isolated incident, however. Clemson’s offense has stalled all season, with Uiagalelei falling short of his bill as the next star quarterback.
Part of that is certainly on the young quarterback, who has missed a lot of shots this season. However, the bulk of the blame does not fall on Uiagalelei but rather on offensive coordinator Tony Elliott.
Tony Elliott is the reason DJ Uiagalelei is fighting for Clemson football
Elliott has been a popular head coaching contender over the years, but has stuck with Clemson throughout this time. And this season may be a statement as to why that is the case.
Clemson and Elliott’s football have been blessed with two generational quarterbacks, Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence, essentially back-to-back heading into this season when Uiagalelei took over the starting position. The simple truth about players of this caliber, however, is that they are able to overcome program and roster shortcomings solely because of their skill.
But with an inexperienced young player like DJU taking over, no matter how talented he is, there comes a point when the offensive coordinator needs to earn his salary and put the quarterback in the best places to succeed. Elliott was a dismal failure on this front.
There’s a reason Clemson’s offense has worked next to nothing throughout the season, with Uiagalelei at the forefront of that but also a rushed pedestrian attack despite some quality options in the back. -field. Elliott’s plan has been mediocre in the nicest terms and he doesn’t have the world quarterback talent to cover that up now.
It is not yet clear what the future holds for DJ Uiagalelei. However, if he were to transfer, we would likely see a player revitalized simply because he would likely team up with an offensive coordinator who doesn’t need generational talent to be successful.
