COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – The College of St. Benedict and the University of St. John’s are investigating allegations that some male students entered a contest this fall to see who might have more sex with female students.
The allegations were first reported by The Record, the student newspaper for the two colleges, which are Roman Catholic schools.
Katie Alvino, spokesperson for partner schools, said the administration has been investigating since learning of the allegations in late September. Alvino did not confirm the nature of the allegations, citing the investigation, but said in a statement to The Associated Press: “We will not tolerate any sexual misconduct in any form. We use qualified and impartial third party investigators to determine responsible parties. “
It was not immediately clear whether any of the allegations involved criminal acts, such as sexual assault.
The College of St. Benedict and the University of St. John are located in the central Minnesota city of Collegeville. Men go to St. John’s and women go to St. Benedict’s.
According to The Record, some students in a St. John’s dormitory ran a contest to see who could have the most sex with the St. Benedict students who were on a list. Liam Miller, a resident assistant at St. Patrick Hall, said journal points were awarded for various things, but additional details were unclear.
The Institute for Women’s Leadership at the College of St. Benedict is encouraging St. Benedict students to step out of class Thursday afternoon and participate in a sit-in to demand action and speak out against sexual misconduct.
